About Me

As a wise woman herbalist, I believe in taking a holistic approach to healing chronic inflammatory conditions. While conventional medicine has its place, I advocate for incorporating anti-inflammatory herbs, foods, and lifestyle practices to address the root causes of inflammation and promote overall well-being. On this website, I’ll share my perspective on using natural remedies to reduce inflammation and improve quality of life.

Herbalist, Cook, and Lifelong Learner!

Hello! I’m Carolyn Smith-Kizer, and I wear many hats – herbalist, gourmet cook, seamstress, gardener, and historical reenactor, to name a few. But at my core, I’m a woman passionate about empowering others to take charge of their health and embrace the healing wisdom of nature by using herbs and anti-inflammatory foods.

Years later, while reenacting as a French Colonial Reenactor translating 18th Century cookbooks, I stumbled upon cookbooks that mentioned healing herbs. Intrigued, I began to explore. What started as curiosity blossomed into a calling.

22+ year Cancer Survivor

Lipedema . . .

I immersed myself in the study of Western traditional herbal medicine, eventually training as a Vitalist Clinical Herbalist.

Along the way, I also learned to live with and manage a diagnosis of lipedema and lymphedema as a result of cancer surgery [22+ years a survivor], a journey that deepened my commitment to body positivity and health-focused living.

Eleven percent of women worldwide suffer with lipedema, a rare adipose disease (RAD) first described scientifically in the 1940s.

Elective surgery, i.e., liposuction, is not a treatment path I choose to follow, so I am learning to manage my condition with herbs, anti-inflammatry foods and lifestyle modification for lipedema.

Why Herbal Remedies?

Herbal preparations offer a multitude of benefits for managing inflammation:

  • Holistic Support: Herbs work synergistically with the body to support its natural healing processes.
  • Fewer Side Effects: Compared to conventional medications, herbs typically have fewer and less severe side effects.
  • Versatility: Herbs can be used in various forms, including teas, tinctures, and topical applications, making them adaptable to individual needs.

I have always been interested in plants . . .

baby on hands and knees smelling flowers

As a baby, I was told I could look at or smell, but I could not pick the Muscari, or grape hyacinths, in my grandmother’s new front yard in Idaho.

As an adult, I delight in foraging wild edibles. Here are spruce tips for making jelly and spruce tip beer in Michigan.

Bellis perennis L. lawn daisy paquerette

When living on Adak Island in the Aleutians, I was amazed to look down and see tiny daisies growing in the grass–the 140 mph winds couldn’t blow them away! And they were amazingly medicinal said Pliny the Elder, 70 CE.
